I played in the U.S. Golf Teachers Cup October 7 & 8, 2013 in Tunica Mississippi at Tunica National Golf & Country Club. Seventy Teaching Professionals from the World Golf Teachers Federation attended the 18th annual event where I shot a 78,69 for a two day total of 147 winning the cup, 4 shots clear of second place.
Day one was just survival with 70 km winds, cold temperatures and lighting fast bermuda greens made scoring low almost impossible.
As you can see from the picture below, if you were not straight off the tee you were dropping another ball. The lowest score of the day was 75 by Bruce Sims from Texas.
I started in 6th place and teed off in the second last group on day 2. The weather again was cold and windy. The round started off well as I birdied 2 of the first 3 holes and finished off the front with a birdie on the 9th to be 3 under on the first nine with only 11 putts. The back nine started off very similar with a birdie on 11 to go 4 under but a bad club selection off the tee on 12 led to the first bogey of the day. I made par on the next 3 holes before I put the tournament away on the 16th hole par 5. A driver down the middle leaving 184 yards down wind, selecting a 7 iron and hitting it to the centre of the green leaving a 20 foot eagle putt. A simple 2 putt birdie with the last two holes going par, bogey gave me the championship. I am the fourth Canadian to ever win the event.
I will defend my title in Las Vegas next year at Boulder Creek Golf & Country Club.
I would also like to thank my wife Sharon for all her encouragement and support over the past 5 years while I worked on my game.
I would also like to thank Mark and Sue Trowman (owners of The Bluffs Golf Club) for all their support as well.
